As we flew into Cairo, we were struck by the ‘more of the same’ buildings that dominate the landscape of this large city.
We didn’t see ‘suburbs’ with single or double storey dwellings. We saw a mass of skyscrapers that line all the city streets. Buildings that appear never finished and we wondered why (perhaps, as in other countries, you only get taxed on buildings that are ‘complete’).
There is certainly a contrast between the architectural genius of early Egyptians and the unfinished homogeneity of the buildings that mark the Cairo of today.
